It is with great pleasure that I give my highest commendation to Dr Paul Barach for the outstanding service he has provided to Fisher-Titus Medical Center. Paul visited Fisher-Titus on three occasions and each time he made a tremendous impact on our medical staff. The first two were in collaboration with The Advisory Board Company and were focused on Quality. After each of the face to face one on one sessions with physicians from a wide array of specialties the feedback was uniformly glowing. Our staff derived a lot from the sessions and gained a deeper understanding of Quality and its impact on Healthcare delivery. On his third visit Paul came as an invited speaker to present at our monthly medical staff meeting on the topic of Patient Safety and Advocacy: the role and importance of physician engagement in managing patient care, quality, and costs. At the end of the session the entire audience was clearly engaged and stayed well past time to actively participate and turned it into a forum for the meaningful exchange of ideas and thoughts. We are planning to bring Paul back to speak before the Board of Governors and Executive leadership and to also return as a speaker at our monthly medical staff meetings. I am impressed with Dr Barach’s scholarly understanding of Patient Safety, Quality Improvement, Team Training, Harm reduction, and his ability to connect with his audience in a manner that is too rarely seen. I deeply appreciate and share Paul’s enthusiasm and passion for Patient Safety and Quality in Healthcare. I am truly delighted to have met him and look forward to many future collaborations in our mutual quest for a better healthcare delivery model.

I have known Paul Barach for more than 5 years now and can confidently vouch that he is one of the most amazing healthcare professionals in my global network.
His heart is with the patients and hence he has dedicated his life for creating safer systems for patients. He is a very passionate professional, possessing excellent communication, interpersonal & presentation skills. His expertise in research, critical analysis, and creating systems is unparalleled.
As Project Director of Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement & Safety (RIHIS) and Chairman, International Conference on Patient Safety, I requested him to help us in our journey of patient safety in Pakistan by taking the position of Chairman of the International Advisory Board of RIHIS and visiting faculty at Riphah International University. His work in Pakistan in providing national and integrity leadership for the establishment, operation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of effective management policies, programs, and practices that maximize clinical patient safety has been exemplary. Some of his exceptional qualities include Leading change and People, Driving Results, Building Coalitions, Teaching people around him, and bringing all stakeholders together around a common objective. It has been a privilege knowing Paul as a personal friend and colleague and I wish him all the best in all his endeavors.

I have known and worked with Paul in a variety of settings over the past ten years. Always respectful, knowledgeable, and professional, he is a beacon of illumination for safety in the healthcare sector. Whatever the setting, Paul has been able to systematically study and analyse patterns of activity and latent factors that affect the safety of both patients and personnel, driven by a deep desire to improve the quality of care delivered to patients, informed by his own experience as a recipient of healthcare. Through these experiences, he has emerged as a prolific researcher, and an enlightened author of an impressive corpus. Paul’s approach to safety is both comprehensive and systematic. His knowledge has been developed and structured by decades of study, honed by personal experience at the coalface, and by personal engagement in leading research on human factors in medicine and healthcare. Together, he and I have collaborated on a number of research and writing activities, so I have had opportunity to observe, evaluate, and understand the dedication and singleness of purpose that focuses all his abundant abilities on patient care. A researcher of unparalleled integrity, not only has he succeeded in securing numerous research grants and attaining countless awards and accolades, but he has not hesitated on more than one occasion to lay his reputation and career on the line and suffer great personal loss in order to attest to the truth whenever patient safety has been compromised. For these qualities, he is widely sought after as an educator, a scientific collaborator, and an advisor. It is a testament to his humility that he works hard to acknowledge his colleagues and find opportunities and outlets for their talents, and contributes energetically and collaboratively to the projects of those with whom he works. He is a natural leader, who leads by example, and by elevating and inspiring those around him. I am privileged to have Paul Barach as a colleague, and I have no hesitation in endorsing him as a champion of healthcare quality and safety.

Paul was a senior advisor on Strategy and Quality of Care for the Australasian College for Health Service Management, where he reported to me as CEO. In all facets of my engagement with Paul, I found his knowledge, passion, professionalism and communication skills were second to none. He was a regular keynote speaker in our education program where he commanded some of the most positive audience feedback we received. He has a unique and diverse skill set that enables him to operate up and down the value chain (from the board room to the ED), across the patient lifecycle, and even across geographies. He is a patient evangelist, a S&Q guru, and a healthcare visionary, and is one of the most well read health professionals I have ever come across. His honest, and sometimes challenging advice, made our conversations one to look forward to in the weekly calendar. I highly recommend Paul to any prospective employer.

I strongly endorse Dr. Paul Barach as a champion for leading healthcare systems seeking to become a High Reliability Organization (HRO). Having known and worked with Paul for over 10 years I recognize that he is gifted hospital administrator, clinician, and researcher who understands that a framework for engaging staff to drive continuous improvement, improving communication, teamwork, trust, and respect among all staff including the medical staff is essential to transforming to a reliable, patient-centered, and safe organization. Paul has extensive national and international experience working with all stakeholders in both public and private healthcare settings in building the pillars of success required for organizational transformation. As an author of many publications and a presenter at international conferences and private symposiums he is acknowledged as an expert in health systems sciences. He is often engaged by organizations due to his unique scientific approach to health systems and policy, population and community health, patient safety and quality improvement. As an engaging physician he has earned a high degree of trust within medical staffs while his empathy and communication skills is well received within the non-physician staff community. Paul is passionate in prioritizing patient and staff safety and high-value patient experience and does so while making it clear that staff are truly the most valuable asset of an organization.

I have known and worked with Dr. Paul Barach for more than a decade and have found him to be both a loyal friend and an untiring resource of patient safety . We first worked together to open the University of Miami School of Medicine and the Jackson Memorial Health System Center for Patient Safety in January, 2005. Since then, Dr. Barach has been an adviser to, and the International Medical Director of CRG Medical, Inc., a patient safety HealthTech company for predicting and preventing preventable patient harm in hospitals. Most recently Dr. Barach facilitated a most successful workshop on High Reliability in Healthcare at the 2015  American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) in Indianapolis. I have found Dr. Barach to always be ready to step up and take a leadership role when necessary, and exhibit tenacity and integrity when completing tasks. The CRG Medical team has just contributed two chapters on Surgical Risk in a new book edited by Dr. Barach. I strongly recommend Dr. Barach as a consultant, patient safety educator and executive coach.

I consulted with Paul on a project in North Carolina that helped assess the strategic needs of agencies that employed doctors and nurses to handle chronic disease  state management for Medicaid patients. Paul demonstrated excellent qualitative research and facilitation skills. He was also very adept at engaging providers who needed to be the champions for change. Paul has a tremendous base of knowledge but more importantly he knows how to communicate it in very practical ways. I look forward to working with him on future projects; especially those involving patient safety and organizational development.

Dr. Barach joined our mission in Peru (2006) and provided excellent management in anesthesia for adults and older children, taught the advanced care principles therein, and led some complex procedures and discussion management topics to help advance standards of care in the ICU. His contributions were at the Children’s Hospital (Lima) and the Honorio Delgado General Hospital, (Arequipa). He also taught safety issues in medicine and gave two lectures. Both hospitals were severely depleted in disposable supplies and a lack of advanced monitoring equipment and he demonstrated with excellence, his ability to adapt in adverse clinical scenarios. He would be welcome on any future mission.
